How to Celebrate Hawaiian Spirit Day at School: Fun Ideas and Activities

Updated: 5 days ago

Hawaiian Day or Luau day is one of my FAVORITE spirit days to celebrate at school as a teacher.

Not only is it fun to see students and staff in their best Hawaiian attire, it is also a great time to learn and teach more about Hawaiian culture.

Although a spirit day can cause students to lose focus on academics, there are plenty of ways to incorporate educational content that tie well into your spirit day theme.

Here are a few ideas for a day FULL of fun and educational Hawaiian activities:

Reading/ELA:

On spirit days, I like to read fictional stories that include the theme of the day. To keep things educational, I have students fill out a graphic organizer identifying story elements and main idea.

Here are a few book recommendations for Hawaiian day:

Writing:

I love having students do creative writing on spirit days. For Hawaiian day, students could write about what they would do if they got to travel to Hawaii or write an opinion piece about if they would want to travel to Hawaii one day.

Math:

For math, I LOVE using color by codes or color by number activities for math on spirit days. Not only do students get to walk away with a nice picture to color, they also practice skills like addition or subtraction.

Bonus/Fun Activities:

There are so many other activities that can be done as bonus or fun activities on a spirit day. One of my favorites to do is BINGO. This is because BINGO is one way to teach students vocabulary words that they may not already know.

Additionally, it turns into a fun game that students will want to play ALL day.

If any of these ideas sound like fun for you and your students, you will DEFINITELY love my Hawaiian Day Activity Bundle.
